Sugar Blue

Friday April 13, 2012 @ 8:00 PM

Grammy Award-winning harmonica virtuoso Sugar Blue is not your typical bluesman...
Born James Whiting - he was raised in Harlem, New York, where his mother was a singer and dancer at the fabled Apollo Theatre. He spent his childhood among the musicians and show people who knew his mother, including the great Billie Holiday, and decided that he wanted to be a performer.
Sugar Blue incorporates what he has learned into his visionary and singular style, technically dazzling yet wholly soulful. He bends, shakes, spills flurries of notes with simultaneous precision and abandon, combining dazzling technique with smoldering expressiveness and gives off enough energy to light up several city square blocks... And sings too! His distinctive throat tends to be overlooked in the face of his instrumental virtuosity - he's got a rich, sensual voice with a whisper of huskiness which by itself would be something out of the ordinary.
But oh, there's that harmonica again... !!

Greg Brown w/ special guest Pieta Brown

Sunday December 4, 2011 @ 8:00 PM

One of American folk music's most prolific and profound singer/songwriters of the past three decades, Greg Brownhas earned respect from his peers and a far-flung, passionately-devoted fan-base via a burnished, intimate baritone, a seemingly effortless gift for swinging, organic melody and--perhaps most of all--a humble, unvarnished poetic grace that can imbue even the most mundane, everyday human endeavors and emotions with quiet dignity, startling insight and gently twisted humor.

Freak Flag (the Iowa native's 24th studio album and first on Yep Roc) was recorded--for the most part--in Memphis, Tennessee's time-tested rock'n'soul incubator Ardent Studios with the artist's longtime sidekick/guitarist Bo Ramsey producing; it features nine Brown originals plus a gorgeous pair of cuts 'borrowed' from his mega-talented family--wife Iris Dement's "Let the Mystery Be" and daughter Pieta Brown's "Remember the Sun."

New CD, Mercury, out September 27, 2011. Recorded out in the country west of Nashville in just three days, Pieta Brown's new album features Grammy-winning producer/player Richard Bennett (Mark Knopfler, Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris), bassist Glenn Worf (Mark Knopfler, Aaron Neville, Tammy Wynette), drummer Chad Cromwell (Neil Young, Mark Knopfler), multi-instrumentalist David Mansfield (Bob Dylan, T-Bone Burnett, Johnny Cash), her long-time collaborator Bo Ramsey (Lucinda Williams, Greg Brown) and an appearance by Mark Knopfler on electric guitar on the track "So Many Miles".

"Self-styled poetess, folk goddess and country waif, Pieta's music resonates with a seductive simplicity and lyrical grace." - BBC

"The best poet I've heard in a long damn time." - Iris DeMent

Tickets - $35, $45

Spanky's Medical Bills Benefit Show - COMEDY

Thursday October 20, 2011 @ 8:00 PM

The comedy community was saddened to learn that on July 26th a careless driver ran a red light as Spanky was entering the intersection on a motorbike. The accident left him in a Level One Trauma Unit with four broken bones that had to be surgically repaired using metal plates and a left side that looked like he slid down a cheese grater. In the months following the accident his lacerations healed and his broken bones mended, but his medical bills will linger for quite some time.

As with many people who are self-employed, full medical coverage is often cost prohibitive, and with those pursuing a career in the performing arts where paychecks can be sporadic, it is even worse. Most comedians (who are not fortunate to be covered on their spouse’s insurance benefits) simply hope they get lucky, or rather, never get unlucky. Spanky’s bad luck came at a shockingly high price; his hospital stay came to an astounding 78 cents per SECOND!

Despite the daunting debt and serious injuries, Spanky’s upbeat attitude remained in tact. Before he was released from the hospital he was already joking that with the new metal plates in his body all refrigerator magnets can double as jewelry and that he will save money this year on his Halloween costume because when the bandages come off he can just go as a pepperoni pizza.

This positive outlook is just one of the reasons Spanky has so many friends, and they plan to rally around him in his time of need. On Thursday, October 20th, 2011 Bridge Street Live will host a fundraiser featuring an All-Star line up of comedians. Don’t miss this hilarious evening for a good cause. This is your chance to bring joy to a man who done the same for so many for so long.

Featured Comedians: John Mulrooney, Andy Pitz, DJ Hazard, Geno Bisconti, Buddy Bolton, Keith Anthony, Carole Montgomery, Ross Bennet, Mark Riccadonna, and Tom Cotter!

Tickets - $20, $30

Debbie Davies Band

Saturday November 26, 2011 @ 8:00 PM

Davies rise to the upper echelon of blues music started at an early age as she absorbed the music heard constantly in her home. Her (professional) musician parents were either sitting at the piano or spinning discs on their turntable, filling the air with the sounds of big band jazz, harmony vocal groups, or the pop icons of the day. But the young Davies was particularly attracted to the bluesier sounds of her father’s Ray Charles records, and by the age of 12 realized that her affinity for an instrument was not for the piano, but for the guitar.

“She wields an electric guitar as if it were a wand.” - Los Angeles Times

“Davies playing is extraordinary - full of propulsion and energy and melodic invention…”People Magazine

Growing up in Los Angeles in the 1960’s, she found that being a female guitar player meant only one thing: acoustic guitar. Electric guitars were still toys meant only for boys. But when Debbie heard the sounds of the British blues-rock bands, particularly the electric guitar of Eric Clapton with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, she became completely captivated. Going against the grains of society’s accepted roles of the time, Debbie pursued her dream with the passion of an artist and the soul of a rebel.

Tickets - $15, $25
