An Evening of Low Rock w/ You Scream I Scream & Bipolar Jukebox

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011 @ 8:00 PM

You Scream I Scream, based on Nantucket and in New York City, is at its core a three-piece band with distorted bass guitar and vocals, Rhodes and synth, along with floor tom-driven drums and big cymbals. The music’s unique fingerprint is part Talking Heads in its beats and the lyrics’ sometimes dark playfulness, and Floyd Kellogg’s vocal stylings--baritone singing and yelling contrasted with “bitchy girl” backing vocals--and stripped-down instrumentation can be reminiscent of Morphine or Soul Coughing. “Bug in a Light,” the band’s debut album, led to several catchy music videos, landing spots on MuchMusic’s "The Wedge,” MTV, New York Noise and Billboard.com. YSIS has recorded material for an EP as well as their second full-length album, to be released later in 2011.

Chatham County Line

Thursday, August 11th @ 8:00 PM

Ten years in, the four gentlemen of Chatham County Line have a lot to reflect on: sold out shows in the US and abroad, appearances on national radio & TV, four solid selling records, and four really dirty suits. "We want to be the band that puts on the most professional show in the business of what we do," says singer/guitarist/songwriter Dave Wilson. "If you've taken your time to be there for us, we are going to prove we are there for you." The newest addition to their bluegrass catalog, Wildwood, is no departure from the path CCL has been carving during its decade of existence. Another strong batch of songs, with solid melodies and lyrics, telling the tales of what all those years on the road have brought to them.

Hot Day At The Zoo

Saturday, October 22nd @ 8:00 PM

New England’s genre-bending American roots string band, Hot Day at the Zoo, is spreading their “zoograss” sound nationwide. The high-energy quartet mixes folk, blues, ragtime and jazz with progressive bluegrass and Americana-infused rock and roll. Hot Day at the Zoo is pioneering their sound in a way that is reminiscent of how Johnny Cash transformed traditional country music. They have the songwriting and full-bodied sound of the Grateful Dead, the technicality and momentum of Sam Bush, the tightness and the ability to talk musically like Charles Mingus, and the cool, easy rock demeanor of Steely Dan. Fans accurately describe this sound as “zoograss.”

Zoograss illustrates a new beginning for HDATZ who continue to develop exponentially. “Every week it seems we are breaking into new, uncharted territory with new songs, new ideas, and new aspirations,” says Dion. “This album is just a taste of what this band is capable of.”

Debbie Davies Band - Saturday, July 23rd @ 8:00 PM

Davies rise to the upper echelon of blues music started at an early age as she absorbed the music heard constantly in her home. Her (professional) musician parents were either sitting at the piano or spinning discs on their turntable, filling the air with the sounds of big band jazz, harmony vocal groups, or the pop icons of the day. But the young Davies was particularly attracted to the bluesier sounds of her father’s Ray Charles records, and by the age of 12 realized that her affinity for an instrument was not for the piano, but for the guitar.
“She wields an electric guitar as if it were a wand.”- Los Angeles Times
“Davies playing is extraordinary - full of propulsion and energy and melodic invention…” People Magazine

The Steel Wheels -- Friday, November 4th @ 8:00 PM

The Steel Wheels are truly an Americana band, rooted in musical styles that explore the territories between blues and bluegrass, old-time sing-alongs and foot-stompin’ fiddle tunes. They are subtle innovators who respect the past but whistle their own tunes, layering in rich textures and decidedly modern energy to forge a new sound.
They fit best among musicians like Langhorne Slim, Gillian Welch, or Adrienne Young and Little Sadie (with whom they’ve shared the stage) – deft musicians making a name for themselves by creating their own particular permutation of traditional forms. Yet the Steel Wheels share much with new Americana favorites like the Avett Brothers or Old Crow Medicine Show, with charisma that causes toes to tap and heads to nod, audiences hanging on their every word.

Jonathan Byrd & Anthony da Costa -- Sunday, August 7th @ 8:00 PM

"Jonathan Byrd is one of the Top 50 songwriters of the last 50 years." - Rich Warren of WFTM in the Chicago Tribune. Others in the Top 50 include Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, Leonard Cohen, John Prine, Pete Seeger, Joni Mitchell and Townes Van Zandt.
A native North Carolinian, Jonathan Byrd grew up singing in the Southern Baptist church, where his father preached and his mother played piano. After four years in the Navy, he returned to home to play in rock bands. It was at an old-time fiddle festival in the mountains of southwest Virginia where his writing began to change. Assimilating the sounds of southern traditional music, Byrd wrote new songs in an ancient style.
One of those first songs was "Velma," a murder ballad based on the true story of Velma Barfield, the last woman to be executed in North Carolina, and the murderer of Jonathan's own grandfather. The song so moved folk music legend Tom Paxton that he wrote: "What a treat to hear someone so deeply rooted in tradition, yet growing in his own beautiful way."
